Final Exams

It's hard to believe that the end of 1st semester is almost here. Here are 1st semester Final Exam time and dates:

Friday, Dec. 18th
EB-->8:30-9:50
2nd-->10:00-11:20
6th-->12:30-1:50

Monday, Dec. 21st
1st-->8:30-9:50
3rd-->10:00-11:20
5th-->12:30-1:50

Tuesday, Dec. 22nd
4th-->8:30-9:50
7th-->10:00-11:20

Here are some tips I found for preparing for your final exams:
*When it comes to studying, start early and start small. Begin reviewing several days out from the final exam and do only short reviews that are meant to refamiliarize you with material you haven’t seen in a while. It takes time and a somewhat gentle touch to get your brain ready to assimilate and recall all the stuff it will need to.
*As you move closer to the final, increase the length and depth of your review. Ramp yourself up into a rigorous review of material gradually but intentionally. By 3-4 days before the final, you ought to be spending significant amounts of time doing significant things each day.
*A very important point: The evening before the exam, don't cram. Spend 10 minutes or so just reviewing. You’re not going to add much to your knowledge that you haven’t done already (assuming you’ve followed the advice above). Also, just like an athlete preparing for a game needs to stop practicing at some point in order to be mentally prepared and relaxed, you need to give your brain a break so that when you hit the exam, you’ll be fresh.
*The night before the exam, get a good night’s sleep, and eat a good breakfast the morning of the exam. Your brain is part of your body. If your body is strung out from lack of sleep and from having no food (or bad food), then your brain will suffer.

*Finally, set up multiple redundant alarm systems so that you will be sure to wake up on time for the exam. You probably already have an alarm clock; let that be your primary alarm system. Then, find a secondary alarm that is not part of the same infrastructural system as the primary. For example, if your primary alarm plugs into the wall, get a secondary one that doesn’t. A very good choice for a secondary alarm is your cell phone; figure out how to use the alarm or wakeup call feature of your cell phone and make sure you charge it up the night before the exam. Set the secondary alarm for 5-10 minutes past the primary. Also, get mom and dad to make sure they know your exam times so you don't oversleep!

START STUDYING NOW! DO NOT PUT IT OFF TIL THE LAST MINUTE! GOOD LUCK!

Study Tips

Step 1: Get Organized! Your textbook does you no good if you don't know where it is, and you can't expect to ace a test you forgot to study for. Keep your things in order and manage your time. Consider keeping a personal organizer to track major assignments and exams, and create a dedicated study area in your home. You'd be amazed what a difference these techniques make.

Step 2: Set Realistic Goals and Stick With Them! If you expect yourself to ace every class, you're probably expecting too much of yourself. Chances are you'll be discouraged when you can't achieve the unrealistic goals you've set for yourself, and become tempted to simply throw in the towel. On the same note, don't settle for merely passing your classes when you know you can do more. Take some time to consider your potential and create a plan you can stick with. Set goals, both big and small. Whether it's to finish your reading assignments before each class session or to keep your grade point average above a 3.0, write everything down and review your list often.

Step 3: Keep Your Priorities Straight! School is about more than your classes. You have extracurricular activities, friends, family and a job on the side. It's important to find a balance, and school should be near the top. With a quality education, you can get a better job or go on to college. It isn't realistic to always put school above everything, and it's crucial to take a bit of 'me' time now and again, but know when it's time to hit the books and respect it.

Study Tips

Here are some tips:

1. Try not to do too much studying at one time. If you try to do too much studying at one time, you will tire and your studying will not be very effective. Space the work you have to do over shorter periods of time. Taking short breaks will restore your mental energy.
2. Plan specific times for studying. Study time is any time you are doing something related to schoolwork. It can be completing assigned reading, working on a paper or project, or studying for a test. Schedule specific times throughout the week for your study time.
3. Try to study at the same times each day. Studying at the same times each day establishes a routine that becomes a regular part of your life, just like sleeping and eating. When a scheduled study time comes up during the day, you will be mentally prepared to begin studying.
4. Set specific goals for your study times. Goals will help you stay focused and monitor your progress. Simply sitting down to study has little value. You must be very clear about what you want to accomplish during your study times.
5. Start studying when planned. You may delay starting your studying because you don't like an assignment or think it is too hard. A delay in studying is called "procrastination." If you procrastinate for any reason, you will find it difficult to get everything done when you need to. You may rush to make up the time you wasted getting started, resulting in careless work and errors.
6. Work on the assignment you find most difficult first. Your most difficult assignment will require the most effort. Start with your most difficult assignment since this is when you have the most mental energy.
7. Review your notes before beginning an assignment. Reviewing your notes can help you make sure you are doing an assignment correctly. Also, your notes may include information that will help you complete an assignment.
8. Tell your friends not to call or text you during your study times. Two study problems can occur if your friends call/text you during your study times. First, your work is interrupted. It is not that easy to get back to what you were doing. Second, your friends may talk about things that will distract you from what you need to do. Here's a simple idea - turn off your cell phone during your study times.
9. Call another student when you have difficulty with an assignment. This is a case where "two heads may be better than one."
10. Review your schoolwork over the weekend. Yes, weekends should be fun time. But there is also time to do some review. This will help you be ready to go on Monday morning when another school week begins. Even 20 minutes of reviewing notes for each class can make a big difference.

STUDY STUDY STUDY!!!

Welcome!

WELCOME STUDENTS! I got this GREAT idea from one of the parents. Kudos to you Ellen! Every week, I will start writing on this blog what is due for the following week, just like I do on the board in my room. That way, you can check from home in case you forgot something. However, some things may be due that I do not have written on here, so it is still your responsibility to know what is due for each class. I will also post some study tips/helpful hints on here every now and then as well. Keep up the hard work. 2nd quarter is off to a great start!
